Parents often ask me two things about architecture: how long it takes and what the architect salary looks like once the degree is done. The short version: you study the five-year B.Arch after class 12 with maths, register with the Council of Architecture, and then earn a modest amount for the first few years. Pay rises well once you have a strong portfolio, site experience and clients who trust you. This page walks through the courses, the entrance exams, the work, the pay at each stage and the honest ups and downs.
What does an architect actually do
An architect plans buildings and the spaces around them. That means homes, schools, hospitals, offices, housing colonies, libraries, and even whole neighbourhoods. A normal week mixes desk work and site work:
- Meeting the client to understand needs, budget and the plot.
- Making sketches, then drawings and 3D models on design software.
- Checking local building bye-laws, setbacks, height limits and fire rules.
- Getting drawings approved by the municipal body or development authority.
- Working with structural engineers, electrical and plumbing consultants.
- Visiting the site to check that the builder follows the drawings.
In India, the title "architect" is protected by law. Only a person registered with the Council of Architecture (COA) under the Architects Act can call themselves an architect. Registration needs a recognised architecture degree such as B.Arch.
Architecture courses after 12th: B.Arch details
The main door is the Bachelor of Architecture. Here are the B.Arch course details that students ask about most.
| Point | B.Arch course details |
|---|---|
| Architecture course duration | 5 years, including a practical training semester in an architect's office |
| Stream needed | Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, usually at least 50 percent aggregate; a 10+3 diploma with maths is also accepted as per COA rules |
| Architecture exam for admission | NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch), plus some state and university tests |
| B.Arch course subjects | Architectural design studio, building construction and materials, structures, history of architecture, climate and building services, landscape, town planning, professional practice |
| Architecture course fees | Government colleges cost much less than private ones; see the fees section below |
| After B.Arch | COA registration, then job, own practice or M.Arch / M.Plan |
Maths is compulsory for B.Arch. If you took Biology without Maths, or Commerce or Arts, look at interior design, which has courses open to all streams. Other architecture design courses such as B.Des in spatial design or a B.Sc in interior design are good options, but they do not give you the legal title of architect.
B.Arch entrance exam: NATA and JEE Main Paper 2
There are two national routes into a B.Arch seat.
- NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) is run by the Council of Architecture. It tests drawing, visual thinking, maths and general aptitude. Most private and many state colleges use NATA scores.
- JEE Main Paper 2A is the B.Arch paper of JEE Main, run by NTA. It has maths, an aptitude part and a drawing test. NITs, Schools of Planning and Architecture and many centrally funded colleges admit through it, with seats given through central counselling.
Many students write both to keep more colleges open. Preparation for the drawing part takes time, so start practising freehand sketching, perspective and composition in class 11. Two to three sketches a day for a year makes a real difference. The exact pattern, marks and dates change, so read the latest brochure on the official website before you fill the form.
Architecture course fees
Fees vary a lot by type of college. Government and centrally funded colleges often charge well under ₹1 lakh a year in tuition. Private colleges commonly charge somewhere between ₹1 lakh and ₹4 lakh a year, and a few charge more. Add the cost of drawing material, models, laptops, software and study tours, which is higher in architecture than in most degrees. Check each college's fee notice, and ask about scholarships for your category and family income.
Architect salary in India: fresher to senior
The architect salary in India starts lower than many people expect, then grows with skill and reputation. The figures below are broad ranges of architecture salary in India per month, not quotes.
| Stage | Typical role | Architecture salary per month (rough range) |
|---|---|---|
| Intern during B.Arch | Trainee in an architect's office | Small stipend, often ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 |
| Fresher, 0 to 2 years | Junior architect | About ₹20,000 to ₹45,000 |
| 3 to 5 years | Project architect | About ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 |
| 6 to 10 years | Senior or associate architect | About ₹70,000 to ₹1.5 lakh or more |
| Own practice | Principal architect | Depends fully on projects; can be far above or below these figures |
What moves the number: the city (metros pay more but cost more), the size of the firm, your software and drawing speed, site knowledge, and whether your college gave you a strong portfolio. So when someone asks for one figure for the B.Arch salary or the average salary of architect in India, the honest answer is that a fresher B.Arch salary per month sits in the lower range above, and it can roughly double in four to six years for a good performer. Architects who build their own practice can earn far more, but the early years are uncertain.
A word on similar sounding titles. Searches for cloud architect salary, software architect salary, solution architect salary or AI architect salary are about senior IT jobs, not buildings. Those roles need a computer science background and many years as a developer. If that interests you, read our software engineer and AI engineer pages instead.
Architecture jobs and where architects work
Architecture jobs fall into a few clear groups:
- Architecture firms and design studios: small and large practices doing homes, offices and public buildings.
- Real estate developers and construction companies: in-house design and coordination teams.
- Urban planning and housing: planning consultancies and housing boards.
- Interior, landscape and conservation work: specialist studios and heritage projects.
- Teaching: architecture faculty jobs in colleges, usually after M.Arch and some experience.
- Own practice: after a few years, many architects start their own office.
Government jobs for architects
Govt jobs for architects exist, but they are fewer than engineering posts, so watch for them closely. Common openings include:
- Architect and Assistant Architect posts in central works departments and ministries, often advertised through UPSC recruitment notices.
- State Public Works Departments, town and country planning departments, development authorities and municipal corporations, through state PSC or direct notices.
- Housing boards, smart city and urban development bodies, and some PSUs that build large campuses.
- Faculty posts in government architecture colleges.
These posts usually ask for B.Arch plus COA registration, and some ask for experience. Pay level and age limit change by post and notification, so check the advertisement on the official website. Central posts follow the 7th CPC pay matrix with DA, HRA and other allowances on top.
Is architecture a good career in India
It suits students who enjoy drawing, design, maths and seeing ideas turn into real buildings. Here is the honest picture.
| Good points | Hard points |
|---|---|
| Creative, visible work that lasts for decades | Five-year degree with long studio nights |
| Legal protection of the title; registered professionals only | Low starting pay in many cities |
| Chance to run your own practice | Income depends on the property and construction market |
| Many side paths: planning, interiors, conservation, teaching | Client handling and approvals can be stressful |
If you want a quicker and lower-cost entry, compare it with B.Tech civil engineering, which has more government exam options. If you are unsure about your interests, take our career test first.

Questions students ask
What is the architect salary per month for a fresher?
Most fresh B.Arch graduates earn roughly ₹20,000 to ₹45,000 a month. Metro cities and larger firms pay towards the top of that range. Pay usually rises steadily after three to five years of experience.
What is the B.Arch course duration and who can apply?
B.Arch is a 5-year course. You need class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, usually with at least 50 percent, or a 10+3 diploma with maths as per Council of Architecture rules. Admission is through NATA or JEE Main Paper 2A.
Which architecture exam should I write after 12th?
Write both NATA and JEE Main Paper 2A if you can. NATA is used by most private and many state colleges, while JEE Main Paper 2A is used for NITs, Schools of Planning and Architecture and other central colleges.
Are there government jobs for architects?
Yes. Central works departments, state PWDs, town planning departments, development authorities, housing boards and municipal bodies hire architects. Posts are fewer than for engineers and need B.Arch plus COA registration. Check the official notification for pay level and age limit.
Can I become an architect without maths in class 12?
No. Maths is required for B.Arch, and only a B.Arch graduate registered with COA can use the title architect. Without maths, look at interior design or B.Des courses, which are open to more streams.
Is a software architect the same as a building architect?
No. A software architect or cloud architect is a senior IT role that designs computer systems. It needs a computer science or IT background and many years of coding experience, not a B.Arch.
