This guide gives you the complete B Com course details: what Bachelor of Commerce covers, who can take it, how many years it lasts, the subjects in each year, the types of BCom, fees, and the jobs, salary and further courses that follow. BCom is the most taken commerce degree in India, and for good reason. It is affordable, it is offered in almost every district, and it pairs well with CA, CS, CMA and bank exams.
Parents often ask me if BCom is "only a general degree". It is a general degree, yes, not a professional one like CA. But what you build on top of it decides your future, and this page shows you the options.
What is B Com course
B Com means Bachelor of Commerce. You study how businesses keep accounts, pay tax, follow company law and manage money. The course is mostly theory with numerical practice, and some universities add computer and practical training in accounting software.
Is BCom a professional course? No. It is an academic degree. Professional qualifications like CA, CS and CMA are given by statutory institutes, and many students study them alongside BCom.

Types of BCom: bcom courses list
How many types of B Com courses are there? Universities use many names, but they fall into these main groups:
| Type | Focus | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| BCom (General or Programme) | Broad accounts, economics, law and management | Students who want flexibility and plan exams |
| BCom Honours | Deeper study of accounting, finance and tax | CA, CMA and MCom aspirants |
| BCom Accounting and Finance | Financial reporting, markets, investments | Finance and audit roles |
| BCom Banking and Insurance | Bank operations, insurance and risk | Bank and insurance jobs |
| BCom Computer Applications or BCom IT | Commerce plus programming, databases and accounting software | Accounts with tech, MIS and data roles |
| BCom Professional Accounting (PA) | Commerce combined with professional exam preparation | Students taking CA, CS or CMA alongside |
Which BCom course is best? For most students, a BCom Honours or a well-taught general BCom from a government college is enough. The B Com IT and computer applications versions suit students who like both numbers and software.
BCom course subjects year by year
Names vary by university, but these are the usual BCom course subjects:
- First year: financial accounting, business economics (micro), business law, business mathematics or statistics, business communication, environmental studies.
- Second year: corporate accounting, cost accounting, company law, income tax, macroeconomics, banking, computer applications in business.
- Third year: management accounting, auditing, GST and indirect taxes, financial management, marketing or human resource electives, a project or internship in some universities.
Accounts and tax subjects are where commerce students build their real job value. Do not just pass them. Practise entries, returns and costing problems until you can do them without help.
BCom course fees in government and private colleges
BCom course fees are among the lowest of any degree. Government and aided colleges usually charge from a few thousand to around a few tens of thousands of rupees a year. Private colleges and private universities often charge much more, sometimes over ₹1 lakh a year in big cities. Online and distance BCom from UGC-entitled universities is cheaper still and suits students who work. Check the fee and recognition on the university's official website before you pay anything.
B Com jobs and salary
B Com job opportunities are wide: accounts, banking, insurance, tax, audit, payroll, finance operations and sales. Our detailed page on jobs after BCom lists every government exam with pay levels. Here is the short version:

|---|---|---|
| Accounts executive or assistant | Firms of every size | Accounting software skill, GST and TDS knowledge |

BCom salary in India for a private fresher is roughly ₹12,000 to ₹30,000 per month, depending on the city and the employer. With 5 to 8 years in accounts or finance, plus skills like tax filing and financial reporting, many reach ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 a month. A BCom Honours salary is not very different at entry; skills and extra qualifications make the gap later. For government posts, pay follows a fixed scale with DA and HRA on top, and you can check the in-hand figure with our salary calculator.
After B Com, government job options are the same as for any graduate, plus a few that prefer commerce, like audit and accounts posts. Commerce students usually find the maths and general awareness sections easier.
After B.Com which course is best
A common question in my office: "B Com ke baad konsa course kare?" Here are the courses after B Com with high salary potential, in order of how often they work out for my students:
- CA: BCom graduates with the required marks can enter at the Intermediate level. Long and tough, but the strongest pay record.
- MBA in finance: through CAT or state tests. See MBA career.
- CS or CMA: good for compliance, costing and PSU finance roles.
- ACCA or CFA: for global accounting or investment roles. See ACCA and CFA courses.
- MCom: for teaching and research after UGC NET.
- B.Ed or LLB: for school teaching or law.
After BCom courses in computer: a data analytics, advanced spreadsheet, or accounting software course, or an MCA where the university accepts commerce graduates with maths. Short computer courses are often the quickest way to raise a fresher's pay.
