SSC CHSL: the biggest sarkari job for 12th pass
SSC CHSL is the Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination. It is held every year by the Staff Selection Commission. As per the latest notice, it fills these central government posts:
- Lower Division Clerk (LDC) or Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA): Pay Level 2, starting basic ₹19,900.
- Data Entry Operator (DEO): Pay Level 4 (₹25,500) or Level 5 (₹29,200), depending on the office.
- DEO Grade A: Pay Level 4, starting basic ₹25,500.
The age limit is 18 to 27 years, with 3 years extra for OBC, 5 years for SC and ST and 10 years for PwBD. Any 12th pass can apply. A few DEO posts in some ministries need 12th in the Science stream with Maths.
The exam has two stages. Tier 1 is a 60 minute computer test with English, reasoning, maths and general awareness: 100 questions, 200 marks, with 0.50 marks cut for a wrong answer. It is only for shortlisting. Your final rank comes from Tier 2, which has maths, reasoning, English, general awareness, a computer knowledge test and a typing or skill test. For LDC, the typing speed needed is 35 wpm in English and 30 wpm in Hindi.
Most students who clear CHSL prepare for 8 to 12 months. Speed in maths and good English decide the rank. Start typing practice early, because many students clear the written exam and then lose time on typing.
SSC Stenographer and SSC Selection Posts
If you can learn shorthand, SSC Stenographer is one of the best govt jobs after 12th with good salary. You need 12th pass. Grade C is open from 18 to 30 years and Grade D from 18 to 27 years.
The computer exam has three parts: reasoning (50 marks), general awareness (50 marks) and English (100 marks), in 2 hours. Then comes the skill test: 10 minutes of dictation at 100 words per minute for Grade C and 80 words per minute for Grade D, typed out on a computer. Grade D posts are at Level 4 (₹25,500). Grade C posts are at Level 6 (₹35,400) or Level 7 (₹44,900), depending on the office. Shorthand takes 6 to 12 months of daily practice, so start in class 12 if you can.
SSC Selection Posts are smaller posts in many central offices. The commission holds a separate computer exam for Matriculation, Higher Secondary and Graduate level posts. Each paper has 100 questions for 200 marks in 60 minutes. Age limits and pay differ by post, so read the post list for your region.

The first computer test has 100 questions on general awareness, maths and reasoning in 90 minutes, and only shortlists you. The second test has 120 questions on the same subjects and decides merit. Then come the typing test where needed, documents and medical. Age rules and seats are set in each notification by the Railway Recruitment Boards, so check your regional RRB website. Other railway options like RRB Group D and RPF constable need only 10th or ITI, so they are open to you too. See all options on our railway jobs page.
