Every year lakhs of 12th pass students fill this form. Many of them are from small towns and families where nobody has a government job yet. If you can study steadily for a year and type well, you have a real chance.
What is SSC CHSL and who conducts it
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the CHSL exam to fill clerical and data entry posts in central ministries, departments, constitutional bodies and offices across India. These are Group C jobs with fixed hours, regular pay, pension under NPS and job security.
You apply online on the SSC website with a one time registration. You can choose posts and give your preference. Your post depends on your rank, category and preference.
SSC CHSL posts and salary
Here is the SSC CHSL jobs list with pay levels as given in the official notice.
| Post | Pay level | Pay range (7th CPC) | Starting basic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) | Level 2 | ₹19,900 to ₹63,200 | ₹19,900 |
| Data Entry Operator (DEO) | Level 4 or Level 5 | ₹25,500 to ₹81,100 or ₹29,200 to ₹92,300 | ₹25,500 or ₹29,200 |
| Data Entry Operator Grade A | Level 4 | ₹25,500 to ₹81,100 | ₹25,500 |
So the SSC CHSL highest salary at the start is for DEO posts at Level 5. The lower division clerk salary and JSA salary start lower, while the data entry operator salary starts higher. Still, the clerical line has a clear promotion ladder.
What about postal assistant salary? Postal Assistant and Sorting Assistant posts were filled through CHSL in older cycles. In the latest notices they are filled through SSC CGL at Pay Level 4, so you need a degree for them now.
SSC CHSL salary per month and in-hand pay
The CHSL salary per month is your basic pay plus allowances, minus deductions. Here is what goes into your pay slip:
- Basic: ₹19,900 for LDC and JSA, ₹25,500 or ₹29,200 for DEO.
- Dearness Allowance: paid as a share of basic. It changes twice every year, so the in-hand amount keeps rising slowly.
- HRA: your posting city decides it. X class cities give the most, Z class towns the least. No HRA if you live in government quarters.
- Transport Allowance: a monthly fixed sum for travel to office, bigger in large cities.
- Deductions: NPS contribution, CGHS, group insurance and tax if any.
For an up to date take-home figure at Level 2, 4 and 5, look at the pay box placed above this article. Try your own numbers here:
For a simple explanation of each allowance, read salary allowances explained.
SSC CHSL salary after 5 years
Your basic pay goes up by about 3% each year through the annual increment, and DA keeps rising. So after 5 years your basic will be clearly higher than at joining, even without a promotion. If you get promoted from LDC to UDC (Level 4), the jump is bigger. Even if you stay in the same post, MACP lifts you one pay level up when you complete 10 years, again at 20 and again at 30.
Eligibility: qualification and age limit
- Qualification: class 12 pass from a recognised board. Students appearing in class 12 can apply if they pass by the cut-off date.
- DEO in some ministries: for DEO posts in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and the Ministry of Culture, you need class 12 in Science with Maths.
- Age limit: 18 to 27 years on the cut-off date in the notice.
| Category | Age relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| OBC | 3 years |
| PwBD (UR / OBC / SC-ST) | 10 / 13 / 15 years |

| Central govt civilian employees with 3 years service | Up to 40 years (45 for SC/ST) |
| Widows, divorced or judicially separated women not remarried | Up to 35 years (40 for SC/ST) |
Fee: ₹100. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and eligible Ex-Servicemen do not pay.
SSC CHSL exam pattern: Tier 1 and Tier 2
The CHSL exam has two computer based tiers. Tier 2 also includes the skill test or typing test.
| Stage | Subjects | Questions / Marks | Time | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | English, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness (25 each) | 100 / 200 | 60 minutes | 0.50 per wrong answer |
| Tier 2, Section I | Mathematical Abilities (30), Reasoning (30) | 60 / 180 | 1 hour | 1 per wrong answer |
| Tier 2, Section II | English Language (40), General Awareness (20) | 60 / 180 | 1 hour | 1 per wrong answer |
| Tier 2, Section III Module I | Computer Knowledge (qualifying) | 15 / 45 | 15 minutes | 1 per wrong answer |
| Tier 2, Section III Module II | Skill Test (DEO) or Typing Test (LDC/JSA), qualifying | Speed based | 15 or 10 minutes | Not applicable |
Tier 1 only shortlists you. Your final rank is made from Tier 2 marks. This is the CHSL tier 2 exam pattern many students search as the CHSL mains exam pattern.
Typing test and DEO skill test
- LDC/JSA typing test: 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi, in 10 minutes.
- DEO skill test: 8,000 key depressions per hour in 15 minutes for most DEO posts. DEO posts in the two ministries named above need 15,000 key depressions per hour.
These tests are only qualifying, but many students fail here after scoring well. Start typing practice early.
SSC CHSL job profile: what the work is like
LDC / JSA: you handle office files, typing of letters and notes, record keeping, diary and dispatch of letters, and data entry. You work under a section officer or office head.
Data entry operator job description: you enter, check and update data in government systems, make reports and keep records correct. Speed and accuracy on the keyboard matter most.
Office timings are usually fixed, with Saturdays and Sundays off in most central offices. Postings can be anywhere in India, but many posts are in Delhi and state capitals. Training is mostly on the job.
Promotions in CHSL jobs
- LDC / JSA can move to UDC or Senior Secretariat Assistant (Level 4), then Assistant or Assistant Section Officer, and later Section Officer, through seniority and departmental exams.
- DEO can rise to higher grades of data entry and IT support posts, depending on the department's recruitment rules.
Many CHSL employees also study for graduation while working and later appear for SSC CGL to jump to a higher level.
SSC CHSL exam preparation tips
- Build basics in maths: percentage, ratio, average, time and work, algebra and geometry.
- Improve English with daily reading and grammar practice. Section II in Tier 2 is heavy on English.
- Read general awareness from class 6 to 10 school books plus daily current affairs.
- Take a full mock test weekly in the first months, then every day near the exam.
- Practise typing for 20 to 30 minutes every day from the start.
