EPFO Exam: Posts, Salary, Eligibility, Pattern and Syllabus

The EPFO exam is the way to get an officer or assistant job in the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, the body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment that manages PF and pension for crores of workers. It suits graduates from any stream who want a central government desk job with good pay, regular hours and postings in most big cities.

There is no single EPFO exam. UPSC holds a Recruitment Test for the officer posts, and the clerical level post of Social Security Assistant has been filled through a separate exam run by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for EPFO. Below I explain each post, its pay level, eligibility, exam pattern and syllabus, so you know which one to aim for.

EPFO jobs: posts, pay level and who recruits

EPFO job profile: what you do every day

APFC: an officer in a regional office who heads sections dealing with PF claims, pension, compliance and recovery. You hear cases against employers who do not deposit PF, supervise staff, and deal with grievances. Senior APFCs can head district or smaller regional offices.

EO/AO: the Enforcement Officer inspects establishments to check that employers register and deposit PF for workers, and the Accounts Officer handles accounts work in the office. It is a mix of field visits and desk work.

SSA: the front line staff who process claims, update member records, handle data entry and help members at the counter. Most of the work is on computer.

EPFO exam eligibility and age limit

Age relaxation follows central rules (see age limit for govt jobs). In UPSC's EPFO advertisements, SC and ST get up to 5 years, OBC up to 3 years, and persons with disability (40 percent or more) get 10 years more, up to a maximum age of 56. Ex servicemen, central government employees and EPFO's own employees also get relaxation as per the advertisement. For UPSC posts, age is counted on the closing date of the online application. So the EPFO exam eligibility is simple: any graduate can apply. You do not need commerce or law, though accounts and labour law knowledge help in the test.

EPFO salary: APFC, EO/AO and SSA pay

Since all three posts are on the 7th CPC pay matrix, the salary box near the top shows the full monthly breakup at Level 5, Level 8 and Level 10. Here is what goes into it.

• Basic pay: ₹56,100 for APFC, ₹47,600 for EO/AO and ₹29,200 for SSA at the start. It rises by about 3 percent each year through the annual increment.
• Dearness Allowance (DA): a percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year by the central government.
• House Rent Allowance (HRA): depends on your city class, X, Y or Z. Most EPFO regional offices are in X and Y cities, so HRA is often on the higher side.
• Transport Allowance: a fixed monthly amount plus DA on it, higher in big cities.
• Deductions: NPS (10 percent of basic plus DA), CGHS, professional tax in some states, and income tax.

When people search "epfo salary in hand" or "epfo salary per month", this is the answer: the in hand amount is gross pay minus these deductions, and it changes when DA changes. Note: you may also see searches like "epfo salary limit" or "epfo salary cap increase proposal". Those are about the wage ceiling for PF contribution for private sector workers, not about the pay of EPFO staff.

EPFO exam pattern: UPSC Recruitment Test

For APFC and EO/AO, selection is a Recruitment Test (RT) followed by an interview. Final merit uses the RT and interview in a 75:25 ratio. In the latest APFC advertisement, the RT carried 300 marks and the interview 100 marks.

In some cycles UPSC has held one common test for both APFC and EO/AO. In others it has advertised the posts separately. The notice tells you which.

EPFO exam syllabus

The UPSC epfo exam syllabus is printed in the advertisement. The topics in the latest APFC notice were:

3. Developmental Issues and Present Trends in Indian Economy
4. Governance and Constitution of India
5. General Science and Basic Knowledge of Computer Applications
6. Elementary Mathematics, Statistics and General Mental Ability
7. Industrial Relations, Labour Codes and Social Security in India
8. Principles of Accountancy, Auditing and Insurance
9. Current Events of National and International Importance

The EO/AO syllabus is very close to this, with General Accounting Principles, Industrial Relations and Labour Laws, and Social Security in India as the subject specific parts. Labour laws, social security and accounting are the topics that set this test apart from other UPSC exams, and they decide most ranks.

SSA exam pattern (EPFO assistant)

In the last SSA recruitment run by NTA, there were two phases. Phase I was a computer based test of 150 questions for 600 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes, covering General Aptitude, General Knowledge, Quantitative Ability, General English and Computer Literacy, with a one fourth negative mark for each wrong answer. Phase II was a computer typing test that was qualifying only. Merit was made on Phase I marks. This pattern can change, so read the next notice carefully.

Training, probation and promotions

APFC and EO/AO officers are on probation for two years. New officers get induction training after joining, covering PF law, pension rules, accounts and office procedure. EO/AOs can move up to APFC and higher posts through departmental promotion as per EPFO's recruitment rules. APFCs rise to Regional PF Commissioner and higher grades over their career. SSAs can be promoted to supervisory and section level posts, and can also sit for the officer level exams if they meet the age limit, with extra age relaxation as EPFO employees.

How to prepare and fill the EPFO exam form

• Know the post: APFC and EO/AO are UPSC exams, so apply only on upsc.gov.in. SSA notices are posted on epfindia.gov.in.
• EPFO exam form: UPSC uses its online recruitment application (ORA). Fill details carefully, upload photo and signature, and pay the fee before the closing time. Keep a printout.
• Study plan: 4 to 6 months is enough for most graduates who already know basics. Spend the first half on labour laws, social security and accounting, and the rest on polity, economy, history and current affairs.
• Use previous papers: UPSC posts old recruitment test papers on its website. Solve them under a 2 hour timer.
• Prepare for the interview: know EPFO's schemes (EPF, EPS, EDLI), basic labour codes and your own degree subject.
