The assistant professor salary under the UGC scale starts at a basic pay of ₹57,700 a month at Academic Level 10, before DA, HRA and other allowances. This applies in central universities and in the many state universities and government colleges that have adopted the UGC pay scales. Private colleges set their own pay, which is often lower. Below I explain what the job involves, who recruits, eligibility, the full professor salary ladder, the selection process, promotions and how to prepare.

College teaching suits people who love their subject, enjoy explaining it and want time for reading and research. It needs patience: most people reach this job only after a master's degree, UGC NET and often a PhD.

What an assistant professor does

Assistant professor is the entry level teaching post in colleges and universities. The old name was lecturer, which is why people still search for lecturer salary and lecturer jobs. The work includes:

  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate classes, usually a set number of hours a week
  • Setting and checking exams, assignments and practicals
  • Research, writing papers and guiding students' projects (and PhD scholars later)
  • Department work: admissions, timetables, committees, events and accreditation tasks

The job has three ranks: assistant professor, associate professor and professor. Universities also have a senior professor rank for a small number of posts.

Eligibility: qualification and age limit

RequirementRule under UGC regulations
Master's degreeAt least 55% marks in the relevant subject (50% for SC, ST, OBC non-creamy layer and persons with disabilities)
Eligibility testUGC NET, CSIR NET or a UGC accredited SET or SLET
PhDOptional for direct recruitment after a UGC amendment; a PhD earned under UGC's PhD regulations exempts you from NET
Age limitUGC sets no upper age; state commissions and universities may set their own limits

UGC has now made NET, SET or SLET the minimum eligibility for direct recruitment, and a PhD gives you extra points in selection rather than being compulsory. Read the UGC NET exam eligibility guide to plan your test. State limits on age differ, so check every advertisement, along with our age limit guide.

Assistant professor salary and professor salary in India

Teachers in universities and colleges have their own academic pay matrix, set by the central government after the 7th Pay Commission and applied through UGC. It is different from the regular 7th CPC matrix used for other government jobs. Here is the ladder with starting basic pay:

Post and stageAcademic levelStarting basic pay per month
Assistant professor (entry)Level 10₹57,700
Assistant professor (senior scale)Level 11₹68,900
Assistant professor (selection grade)Level 12₹79,800
Associate professorLevel 13A₹1,31,400
ProfessorLevel 14₹1,44,200
Senior professor (universities)Level 15₹1,82,200

So the associate professor salary starts at ₹1,31,400 basic, and a professor starts at ₹1,44,200. Basic pay rises by about 3% every year through the annual increment.

Allowances and in-hand pay

On top of basic pay, a government assistant professor gets:

  • DA: a percentage of basic, revised twice a year. Central universities follow central rates; state institutions follow state rates.
  • HRA: depends on the city class (X, Y or Z) of the college, unless you live in campus housing.
  • Transport allowance as per the employer's rules.
  • Deductions: pension contribution (NPS or the applicable scheme), group insurance and income tax.

Because DA changes often, I do not quote a fixed in-hand figure here. Put the basic pay of ₹57,700 and your city class into a calculator to get a current estimate. The salary allowances explained page tells you what each part means.

College professor salary by state, DU and IIT

Professor ki salary kitni hoti hai depends mostly on who employs you:

  • Central universities, including DU: the assistant professor salary in DU and other central universities follows the UGC scale above, with central DA and HRA. Delhi is a class X city, so HRA is at the highest rate.
  • State universities and government colleges: most states have adopted the UGC scales, so the assistant professor salary in Rajasthan, the assistant professor salary in MP and the assistant professor salary in Assam, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal or Kerala all start from the same Level 10 basic, but DA, HRA and the date of adoption follow each state's orders. Check the latest notification of the state's recruiting body.
  • IIT professor salary and IIM professor salary: IITs and IIMs follow separate central pay orders for their faculty, with their own grades and allowances. Entry is usually tougher (a PhD and strong research record are expected), and pay tends to be higher than in a regular college. Check the faculty pages of each institute for the current structure.
  • Private colleges and universities: pay varies widely. Many smaller private colleges pay freshers around ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 a month. Well funded private universities may pay close to the UGC scale, more for strong researchers. After 5 to 8 years, pay depends on your research, publications and the institution.
  • Guest and contract faculty: paid per lecture or a fixed monthly amount, set by UGC guidelines or the state. This is much lower than a regular post.

The word lecturer is also used for other posts. A college lecturer salary in a polytechnic follows the state's technical education scale, and in some states the PGT post in senior secondary schools is called school lecturer. For lecturer job in UP or other states, read the post name carefully. School teaching posts are explained in government teacher.

Who recruits and how to find assistant professor jobs

EmployerHow they recruit
Central universitiesOwn advertisements, screening of applications, then interview by a selection committee
State government collegesState public service commission or a state higher education service commission, for example RPSC in Rajasthan, MPPSC in Madhya Pradesh and the West Bengal College Service Commission
State universitiesOwn advertisements or a state university service commission, for example in Bihar
Private collegesDirect applications and interviews

Assistant professor jobs come subject wise. Assistant professor political science jobs, assistant professor psychology jobs, chemistry assistant professor jobs, physics, economics, sociology, English and law professor jobs are all advertised separately, with the same pay scale but different numbers of posts. Commerce, English and computer science usually have more openings in private colleges, while subjects like political science depend heavily on state commission notices. Assistant professor government jobs in states such as Uttarakhand and Kerala are notified by their own commissions and universities. Follow the official websites, not forwards.

Selection process and assistant professor exam

  1. Eligibility check: master's with 55% and NET, SET or SLET, or a qualifying PhD.
  2. Shortlisting: based on academic record, research papers, teaching experience and other points as per the employer's rules.
  3. Written assistant professor exam: some state commissions, such as RPSC and MPPSC, hold a written exam on the subject and general knowledge before the interview.
  4. Interview: by a selection committee with outside subject experts. Universities may also ask for a seminar or demo lecture to judge teaching skill.

Training and promotions

After joining, you complete an induction or orientation programme on teaching methods, then refresher courses over the years. Promotion runs under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) in UGC regulations:

  • Level 10 to Level 11: after 4 years with a PhD (5 years with M.Phil or a professional PG degree, 6 years otherwise), with good annual reviews and training.
  • Level 11 to Level 12: after 5 more years, with research papers.
  • Level 12 to associate professor (13A): after 3 years, with a PhD, publications and research score.
  • Associate professor to professor (Level 14): after 3 years, with more publications and PhD guidance.

Direct recruitment as associate professor needs a PhD, 8 years of teaching or research experience and published papers. Professor needs 10 years and a stronger research record.

How to prepare

Plan this route early. Score well in your master's, clear UGC NET in your final year or soon after, and start a PhD if you can, ideally with the JRF fellowship. Publish in UGC approved journals, present at seminars, and take a few guest lectures for experience. Many of my students first worked as guest faculty for a year or two while waiting for a state commission exam. If you are still in graduation, see courses after graduation and jobs after BA for the subjects with more college teaching openings.
