A fashion designing course teaches you to plan, sketch, cut and finish clothes and accessories that people will actually buy and wear. After 12th you can pick a 4 year degree, a 3 year degree, a 1 to 2 year diploma or a short certificate, and students from any stream can apply for most of them. Below I explain the routes, the NIFT exam, fees, syllabus, jobs and the real pay picture.
What is fashion designing course and what does the work look like
Many families picture a designer only on a ramp show. The real job is more varied and more practical. A fashion designer studies trends, picks fabrics and colours, draws a collection, makes patterns, gets samples stitched, checks fit on a model and works with the factory so that hundreds of pieces come out the same. Some designers work on ethnic wear, some on kidswear, sportswear, uniforms, bags, footwear or jewellery.
A normal day for a junior designer can include mood boards, spec sheets with measurements, calls with the sampling team and visits to fabric markets. In an export house you may spend more time on buyer comments and costing than on drawing. If you like art and also have patience for detail, this field can suit you.
Types of fashion designing courses after 12th
Students often ask, fashion designer course kitne saal ka hota hai. It depends on the level you choose:
| Course | Duration | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| B.Des (Fashion Design, Textile, Accessory, Knitwear) | 4 years | Students aiming for design roles in brands and export houses |
| B.FTech (Apparel Production) | 4 years | Students who like the technical and factory side; mostly for science students with Maths |
| B.Sc or BA in Fashion Design | 3 years | Students who want a regular university degree |
| Diploma in Fashion Design | 1 to 2 years | Those who want to start working quickly or open a boutique |
| Certificate or short-term courses | 3 to 12 months | Tailoring, pattern making, embroidery or styling skills |
| M.Des, MFM, M.FTech | 2 years | Graduates who want design management or senior roles |
So the fashion designing course duration is usually 3 to 4 years for a degree. If you plan a boutique or tailoring unit in your own town, a 1 year diploma plus good stitching practice can be enough to begin. You can compare this with other options on our courses after 12th arts and career options after 12th pages.
NIFT exam and other fashion designing entrance exams
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a government institute under the Ministry of Textiles with campuses in many cities. NIFT courses include B.Des, B.FTech, M.Des, MFM and M.FTech. Admission is through the NIFT exam, held once a year.
What is NIFT exam like? For B.Des it has a Creative Ability Test (CAT), where you draw and show ideas, and a General Ability Test (GAT) with English, maths, reasoning, general knowledge and case questions. B.FTech has only the GAT type paper, with more weight on maths and logic. Some programmes add a further round. The NIFT exam syllabus, paper pattern, the body conducting it and the age limit are all printed in the admission prospectus, so read that carefully on nift.ac.in before you apply.
Other fashion designing exams worth knowing:
- NID DAT: the Design Aptitude Test of the National Institute of Design, for its B.Des programmes.
- UCEED: run by IIT Bombay for B.Des at some IITs and other institutes. It is design-focused, not only fashion.
- University or state tests: many state and private universities hold their own test or admit on 12th marks. Some take CUET scores.
Our entrance exams after 12th list shows how these fit with other tests.
Fashion designing course syllabus and subjects
The fashion designing course subjects change a little from college to college, but most degree courses cover:
- Drawing, illustration and colour theory
- Elements and principles of design
- Textile science: fibres, yarns, weaves, dyeing and printing
- Pattern making, draping and garment construction
- History of fashion and Indian traditional crafts
- Computer aided design for patterns and graphics
- Fashion marketing, merchandising and costing
- Portfolio building, an industry internship and a final collection
For a fashion designer course in Hindi, some state polytechnics and open universities teach diploma and certificate levels in Hindi or regional languages. Degree courses at national institutes are taught in English.
Fashion designing course fees
Fees vary a lot, so treat these as broad ranges. Government fashion designing course fees, for example at NIFT, are lower than most private design schools, but still not small: a degree at NIFT costs a few lakh rupees in total across 4 years, and the exact NIFT course fee is in the prospectus. Private colleges can charge anything from a few lakh to well over ₹15 lakh for the full degree. A diploma or certificate at a polytechnic or local institute may cost from a few thousand to around ₹1 lakh. Add the cost of fabrics, art material, a laptop and hostel.
Many government institutes offer fee waivers or scholarships for students from low-income families. Ask the admission office before you assume you cannot afford it.
Online fashion design courses: are they enough?
An online fashion designing course is useful to test your interest, learn illustration or pick up software skills. Free online fashion design courses from public platforms of universities can teach basics. But fashion is a hands-on field. You need to touch fabrics, cut, stitch and fit on a body, and employers look for an internship and a strong portfolio. Use online learning as an add-on, not as a full replacement for a proper course, unless you only want to run a small home-based business.
Fashion designer salary in India and per month
This is a field where pay grows slowly at first and depends heavily on skill and portfolio. Rough fashion designer salary ranges:
| Stage | Typical salary of fashion designer per month |
|---|---|
| Fresher, small boutique or local label | about ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 |
| Fresher from a top institute, brand or export house | about ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 |
| 5 to 8 years, senior designer or design manager | about ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh or more |
| Own label or boutique | no fixed salary; depends on orders and business skill |
Pay is higher in big fashion and garment hubs like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Tiruppur and Jaipur. Merchandisers and production managers in export houses often earn more early on than pure designers. For comparison with other fields, see highest paying jobs in India.
Fashion designer jobs and job in fashion designing for fresher
Where do people work after a fashion designing course?
- Garment export houses and buying offices
- Retail clothing brands and ethnic wear labels
- Textile mills and handloom or handicraft development bodies
- Film, television and theatre costume teams
- Uniform makers for schools, hospitals and companies
- Teaching in design colleges and polytechnics
- Own boutique, tailoring unit or online store
Common entry roles are assistant designer, design trainee, merchandiser, quality controller, pattern maker, fashion stylist and visual merchandiser. A job in fashion designing for fresher usually comes from the college internship, so take that internship seriously. If you also enjoy graphics and digital art, look at the graphic designer career too.
Is fashion designing a good career? Pros and cons
Good points: creative work, many paths (design, production, buying, styling, own business), low barrier to start a small boutique, and demand in a large garment industry.
Hard points: low pay in the first two years for many, long hours near deadlines, a lot of competition, and the need to keep learning trends. Contacts and portfolio matter more than marks.
