The Delhi Police constable salary starts at a basic pay of ₹21,700 a month at Pay Level 3 of the central pay matrix (7th CPC), and the scale goes up to ₹69,100 with yearly increments. Dearness allowance, Delhi city HRA and travel allowance are paid over and above that basic. The exam is run by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), and the PE&MT and medical are done by Delhi Police. Below I explain the pay, posts, eligibility, exam pattern and how students actually clear it.

What a Delhi Police constable does
A constable is the first rank in the force and the face of the police for most people in Delhi. Your day may include beat patrol in a colony, duty at a police station, traffic points, PCR vans, VIP routes, court duty, crowd control at festivals and rallies, and helping the investigating officer in cases. Shifts can be long and holidays are not always free, because the city never stops. In return you get a permanent central government job in the national capital, a pension under NPS, medical facilities and a clear promotion ladder.
The post is Group C, non-gazetted. Both men and women are recruited, and women get a separate share of vacancies in every notification.
Delhi Police constable salary and pay level
The official notice of the Constable (Executive) exam lists the post at Pay Level 3, ₹21,700 to ₹69,100. That is the same level as constables in the central armed police forces through SSC GD Constable. The salary box near the top of this page works out the current DA, HRA and in-hand estimate from this level, so you see a live figure instead of an old one.
Here is what makes up the Delhi Police salary per month:
- Basic pay: ₹21,700 at the start. It rises by about 3 percent every year on 1 July or 1 January, depending on your joining date.
- Dearness Allowance (DA): the Centre raises this share of your basic in January and July, so it keeps climbing.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): Delhi is an X class city, so you get the highest HRA slab if you do not live in government quarters. Constables staying in a police quarter or barrack do not draw HRA.
- Transport Allowance: Delhi falls in the higher slab for this monthly amount, and DA is added to it.
- Deductions: 10 percent of basic plus DA goes to NPS, plus small cuts for CGHS and the insurance scheme, and tax only when yearly pay crosses the exemption limit.
So when someone asks "Delhi Police ki salary kitni hai", the honest answer is: basic ₹21,700 plus allowances, and the in-hand changes every time DA is revised. Use the calculator below to check the in-hand for your own case.
Delhi Police salary list by rank

| Inspector | Level 7 | ₹44,900 |
The Delhi Police driver salary is the same Level 3 basic as an executive constable, and the Delhi Police HC ministerial salary and AWO/TPO salary both start at ₹25,500 basic. The Sub-Inspector post is filled through the SSC CPO exam; read our Sub-Inspector guide for that route.
Eligibility and age limit
As per the latest Constable (Executive) notice:
- Qualification: 10+2 (class 12) pass from a recognised board. For sons and daughters of serving, retired or deceased Delhi Police personnel, and for bandsmen, buglers, mounted constables, drivers and dispatch riders of Delhi Police, it is relaxed to class 11 pass.
- Driving licence: male candidates must hold a valid LMV licence (motorcycle or car) on the day of PE&MT. A learner's licence is not accepted. Get your licence early, many boys lose the seat only because of this.
- Age: 18 to 25 years on the cut-off date given in the notice.
Upper age relaxation, as listed in the notice:
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| OBC | 3 years |
| SC/ST | 5 years |

Selection process and Delhi Police exam pattern
Selection has these stages:
- Computer Based Examination (CBE) conducted by SSC.
- Physical Endurance and Measurement Test (PE&MT) and document verification by Delhi Police. This is qualifying.
- Medical examination and final merit. NCC certificate holders and some degree or diploma holders from Rashtriya Raksha University get bonus marks in the final result if they submit proof at the PE&MT stage.
The Delhi Police constable exam pattern for the CBE looks like this:
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | General Knowledge and Current Affairs | 50 | 50 |
| B | Reasoning | 25 | 25 |
| C | Numerical Ability | 15 | 15 |
| D | Computer Fundamentals, MS Word, MS Excel, Internet, communication | 10 | 10 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
The Delhi Police exam time is 90 minutes. There is a negative marking of 0.25 for each wrong answer, and the paper comes in Hindi and English. The notice also fixes minimum qualifying marks: 35 for unreserved, 30 for SC, ST, OBC and EWS, and 25 for ex-servicemen. Clearing these marks only makes you eligible for the PE&MT; the actual cut-off is usually much higher.
PE&MT standards
| Test (age up to 30) | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 km race | 6 minutes | 8 minutes |
| Long jump | 14 feet | 10 feet |
| High jump | 3 feet 9 inches | 3 feet |
| Height | 170 cm | 157 cm |
| Chest | 81 to 85 cm (4 cm expansion) | Not applicable |
Older departmental and ex-servicemen candidates get easier timings. Height is relaxed for hill area residents, ST candidates and wards of Delhi Police staff. You get three chances in each jump. Eyesight must be 6/12 in both eyes without glasses, and you must be free of colour blindness.
Head constable exam pattern (HCM and AWO/TPO)
The Delhi Police HCM exam pattern also starts with a 100 question, 100 mark CBE of 90 minutes, followed by PE&MT, a typing test on computer and a computer formatting test. Typing speed needed is 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi. In the last HCM notice, 0.50 marks were cut for a wrong answer, so read the scheme carefully. The Delhi Police AWO TPO exam pattern has its own CBE, PE&MT and trade or computer test, and the subjects lean towards the technical side because the work is in wireless and teleprinter communication. Always confirm the latest Delhi Police head constable exam pattern in the SSC notice of that cycle.
Training and probation
After final selection you go through basic training at a Delhi Police training centre. Training covers drill, weapons, criminal law and procedure, traffic rules, computer work, first aid and outdoor fitness. You draw the full pay of Level 3 during training, so the Delhi Police constable salary in training is the same basic of ₹21,700 plus admissible allowances. The probation period is two years, after which you are confirmed in service.
Promotions and career growth
The normal path is Constable to Head Constable to ASI to Sub-Inspector to Inspector. Promotions come through departmental courses, tests and seniority lists, and the speed depends on vacancies in your cadre. Many constables also keep writing other exams. Since you already have a class 12 or a graduation degree, you can apply for SSC CPO, other SSC exams or even state services. Financial upgrades under the government's career progression scheme help if promotion is slow.
How to prepare for the Delhi Police exam
- Start with the syllabus: GK and current affairs carry half the marks. Read one newspaper daily and revise static GK (history, polity, geography, science) from NCERT class 6 to 10 books.
- Reasoning and maths: practise 30 to 40 questions a day. Topics are basic: series, coding, directions, percentages, ratio, profit and loss, time and work.
- Computer part: learn MS Word and Excel shortcuts, internet basics and email terms. These 10 marks are easy to score.
- Mock tests: take full CBT mocks of 90 minutes. Because of negative marking, skip guesses you cannot narrow down.
- Running: start running from day one. Most students need two to three months of practice to finish 1.6 km comfortably in time.
- Documents: keep your class 10 and 12 marksheets, category certificate, LMV licence and NCC certificate ready.
A serious student usually needs four to six months of steady study for the written part. If you want options beyond Delhi, compare with UP Police constable, Bihar Police constable and our general police constable salary guide.
