For diploma holders this is one of the best sarkari job options. I have seen many polytechnic students from ordinary families clear it in one or two attempts. Here is everything about the job, posts and salary, the exam pattern and preparation.
What does an SSC Junior Engineer do
A Junior Engineer (JE) is the engineer on the ground. In a works department like CPWD or MES, a JE civil looks after buildings, roads and repairs: checking that work is done as per drawings, measuring work, keeping site records, preparing estimates and checking contractor bills. A JE electrical or mechanical handles power supply, lifts, pumps, air conditioning and other services in government buildings and projects. In water bodies like the Central Water Commission, the work can include river gauging, dams and flood data.
Expect site visits, measurement books and file work. Postings can be anywhere in India, and BRO and MES posts can be in border or remote areas.
Who conducts the SSC junior engineer exam
The Staff Selection Commission conducts the Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical and Electrical) Examination once a year for central government departments. In a recent notice, the departments were:
| Department | Posts | Upper age limit |
|---|---|---|
| Central Public Works Department (CPWD) | JE Civil, JE Electrical | 32 years |
| Military Engineer Services (MES) | JE Civil, JE Electrical and Mechanical | 30 years |
| Border Roads Organisation (BRO), male only | JE Civil, JE Electrical and Mechanical | 30 years |
| Central Water Commission | JE Civil, JE Mechanical | 30 years |
| Central Water and Power Research Station | JE Civil, JE Electrical | 30 years |
| DGQA Naval, Ministry of Defence | JE Mechanical, JE Electrical | 30 years |
| Farakka Barrage Project | JE Civil, JE Electrical | 30 years |
| Brahmaputra Board | JE Civil | 30 years |
| NTRO | JE Civil | 30 years |
The list of departments can change with each notice, so check the latest one. All SSC JE jobs listed above are at the same pay level.
Eligibility, qualification and age limit
The qualification depends on the department:
- Diploma is enough: CPWD, Central Water and Power Research Station, Farakka Barrage, Brahmaputra Board and NTRO accepted a diploma in the right branch in the recent notice. Central Water Commission accepted a degree or diploma.
- Degree, or diploma plus 2 years of experience: MES, BRO and DGQA Naval. Experience must be after your diploma; internships during study do not count.
ECE students eligible for SSC JE? Recent notices list only civil, electrical and mechanical streams. An electronics and communication degree on its own usually does not fit these rules, so read the qualification table of the latest notice before you apply.
Age limit: up to 30 years for most posts and up to 32 years for CPWD, with a minimum of 18. Upper age relaxation: SC and ST 5 years, OBC 3 years, PwBD 10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC and ST), and former soldiers get 3 years beyond the length of their army service. SSC JE salary per month and pay breakdown
Every SSC JE post and salary is the same: Level 6. So the SSC JE starting salary is the same for civil, electrical and mechanical. The SSC JE civil engineer salary, SSC JE electrical salary and SSC JE CPWD salary all start at a basic pay of ₹35,400. Your in-hand salary changes mainly with the city you are posted in.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pay level | Level 6, 7th CPC |
| Starting basic pay | ₹35,400 |
| Pay range at this level | ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400 |
| Group | Group B, non-gazetted |
For the full SSC JE salary in hand with today's DA, look at the pay summary box shown at the top. The monthly pay is made up of:
- Basic pay of ₹35,400 to start.
- Dearness Allowance: a percentage of basic pay that the government revises twice a year.
- House Rent Allowance: highest in X class cities, lower in Y and Z cities. Not paid if you live in government quarters.
- Transport Allowance: a fixed monthly amount that is larger in metro cities.
- What gets cut: your pension contribution (10% on basic and DA together), group insurance, and income tax if it is due.
SSC JE salary after 5 years: basic pay rises about 3% each year, and DA keeps going up, so your pay grows steadily even without promotion. SSC JE salary after 10 years: by then many JEs have been promoted to Assistant Engineer. Those who are not get a financial upgrade to the next pay level under the MACP scheme after 10 years of service. Allowances are explained in detail on our salary allowances page.
SSC JE exam pattern and selection process
The SSC JE exam has two computer based papers. Both are objective and in Hindi and English.
| Paper | Subjects | Questions and marks | Time | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | General Intelligence and Reasoning (50), General Awareness (50), General Engineering (100) | 200 questions, 200 marks | 2 hours | 0.25 per wrong answer |
| Paper 2 | General Engineering only (Civil and Structural, or Electrical, or Mechanical) | 100 questions, 300 marks | 2 hours | 1 mark per wrong answer |
- You must pick the engineering part that matches your diploma or degree.
- Scribe-eligible candidates get 2 hours 40 minutes.
- To qualify, the recent notice asked for at least 30% (unreserved), 25% (OBC, EWS) or 20% (all other categories) in each paper.
- Final merit uses your marks in both papers plus the department preferences you give. BRO candidates also face physical and medical tests.
- After the result, candidates go through document verification.
Training after joining
There is no common training for all JEs. Each department trains you in its own way: some run induction courses at their training institutes, and others train you on the job under an Assistant Engineer. You serve a probation period before you are confirmed. BRO and MES postings may need extra field training.
Promotions and career growth
The usual next step is Assistant Engineer, then Executive Engineer and higher posts. How fast you move depends on your department's rules, seniority and vacancies. Some departments also allow promotion through departmental exams. If you want to start higher, look at the engineering services exam, which recruits Group A officers. Railways also hire JEs separately through the RRB JE exam.
How to prepare for the SSC JE exam
- Technical first. Engineering carries 100 of 200 marks in Paper 1 and all of Paper 2. Revise your diploma subjects fully.
- Do previous papers. SSC repeats its style. Solve old Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions topic by topic.
- Reasoning and GK: one hour daily is enough. The same material works for SSC CGL.
- Be careful in Paper 2. One mark is cut for each wrong answer, so do not guess blindly.
- Mock tests: one full test a week in the last two months.
Most students who start after their diploma need 6 to 10 months of steady study. You do not need a paid SSC JE course to clear it, but a good set of notes and test series helps. For more options after a diploma, see diploma jobs and PSU jobs.

Questions students ask
What is the salary of SSC JE?
SSC JE is at Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission, with a starting basic pay of ₹35,400 and a pay range up to ₹1,12,400. DA, HRA and transport allowance are added. The in-hand amount depends on your city; the pay summary box at the top shows an estimate.

No. All SSC JE posts, whether civil, electrical or mechanical, are at Level 6. Differences in take-home pay come only from city allowances and deductions.

Yes. CPWD and several other departments accept a diploma in the right branch. MES, BRO and DGQA Naval need a degree, or a diploma with 2 years of work experience.
Are ECE students eligible for SSC JE?
Recent notices list only civil, electrical and mechanical streams, so ECE on its own usually does not qualify. Check the latest notice, because the qualification table decides it.
What is the SSC JE exam pattern?
Paper 1 has 200 marks across reasoning, general awareness and general engineering, with 0.25 negative marking. Paper 2 is general engineering only, 100 questions for 300 marks, with 1 mark cut per wrong answer. Both are 2 hours.
What is the age limit for SSC JE?
Up to 30 years for most departments and up to 32 for CPWD in the recent notice. SC and ST get 5 years and OBC 3 years extra.
