The DA full form in salary is Dearness Allowance. It is extra money paid on top of basic pay so that a government salary keeps up with rising prices. This guide explains DA and every other term you see on a payslip or a job offer, in simple words, with an example payslip.
DA full form in salary: Dearness Allowance
DA is a percentage of your basic pay. The central government revises it twice a year based on price rise, and most state governments follow with their own rates. If your basic is ₹35,400, your DA is ₹35,400 × the DA rate. To see the rupee amount at the current DA rate, prefilled in the calculator, use our 7th CPC salary calculator.
DA in salary meaning, in Hindi: mehngai bhatta (महंगाई भत्ता). DA is paid in government jobs and in public sector banks. Private companies usually do not pay DA.

| Basic pay | ₹35,400 | Starting cell of Level 6 in the 7th CPC pay matrix |
| DA | ₹35,400 × DA rate | Current DA rate on basic |
| HRA | ₹10,620 | 30% of basic (X city) |

What is grade pay in salary, and what is it now
Before the 7th Pay Commission, salary was written as pay band plus grade pay. Now each old grade pay matches one pay level. People still say "2800 grade pay" or "4200 grade pay", so here is the match.
| Old grade pay | 7th CPC pay level | Starting basic now | Example posts |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,800 | Level 1 | ₹18,000 | MTS, railway Group D |
| ₹1,900 | Level 2 | ₹19,900 | LDC, junior clerk |
| ₹2,000 | Level 3 | ₹21,700 | Constable in many forces |
| ₹2,400 | Level 4 | ₹25,500 | Tax assistant, postal assistant |
| ₹2,800 | Level 5 | ₹29,200 | Senior clerk, some railway posts |
| ₹4,200 | Level 6 | ₹35,400 | Sub-inspector in CAPFs, junior engineer |
| ₹4,600 | Level 7 | ₹44,900 | Assistant section officer, excise inspector |
| ₹4,800 | Level 8 | ₹47,600 | Assistant audit officer |
| ₹5,400 | Level 9 or 10 | ₹53,100 or ₹56,100 | Group A entry officers at Level 10 |
| ₹6,600 | Level 11 | ₹67,700 | Senior officer posts |
So "grade pay 2800 means how much salary" has a simple answer: Level 5, with basic ₹29,200 plus DA, HRA and TA. Grade pay 4200 salary in hand after 7th pay is Level 6, 4600 grade pay salary is Level 7, and 5400 grade pay salary is Level 9 or Level 10 depending on the old pay band. State governments such as Rajasthan run their own pay matrix, so a 2400 grade pay salary in Rajasthan or a 2800 grade pay salary in Rajasthan can differ from central pay. Check your state finance department order. For SSC CGL, posts at 2800 grade pay are now Level 5: see SSC CGL posts and pay.

Central and state government jobs pay all three. Public sector banks pay DA and HRA under their own scale: see bank jobs. PSUs follow their own DA system. Private companies pay HRA and sometimes a conveyance allowance, but not DA. If you are choosing between a sarkari job and a private offer, compare the in-hand pay, not only the headline figure.
