Jobs After Graduation: Government and Private Options

Quick answerThe main jobs after graduation are government posts through SSC CGL, UPSC, bank, LIC, railway and state PCS exams, which accept any degree, and private roles in sales, accounts, IT and marketing. Engineering, law and agriculture graduates also get degree-specific posts.

Finding the right jobs after graduation is less about luck and more about picking one route early and sticking to it. Every year I meet graduates who spent two years trying five different exams at once and cleared none. I also meet graduates from ordinary colleges who chose one target, studied for a year with discipline, and got selected. This page shows the main government exams and private roles open to graduates, who can apply, how selection works and what each pays at the start.

Job options after graduation: the four main routes

Almost every graduate fits one of these routes. Pick the one that matches your degree, your age and how soon you need income.

  1. Government exams: SSC, UPSC, bank, insurance, railway, defence and state commission exams. Most accept a degree in any subject. Preparation usually takes 6 to 18 months.
  2. Private jobs: sales, operations, accounts, support, IT and marketing roles. You can start within weeks, and pay grows with skill.
  3. Degree-specific jobs: engineering, law, agriculture, nursing and pharmacy graduates have posts reserved only for their degree, often with less competition.
  4. Further study: MBA, LLB, BEd or a master's degree. See courses after graduation.

Government jobs after graduation: main exams for graduates

Here are the government exams after graduation that most of my students write. Ages are for the general category; reserved categories get relaxation as per the notice. Pay is starting basic pay, not in-hand salary.

The SSC exam for graduates that gives the best mix of pay and seats is CGL. Many graduates also write SSC CHSL as a backup, since it needs only 12th. Salary in govt jobs after graduation

Most central government jobs for graduates follow the 7th CPC pay matrix. Your pay level fixes your starting basic. In-hand pay is built from these parts:

  • Basic pay: for example ₹25,500 at Level 4, ₹44,900 at Level 7, ₹56,100 at Level 10.
  • Dearness Allowance (DA): a percentage of basic, revised twice a year.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): depends on your posting city, class X, Y or Z. Bigger cities pay more.
  • Transport allowance: a fixed monthly amount that depends on level and city.
  • Deductions: NPS contribution, income tax and small items like insurance.

Bank, LIC and RBI jobs have their own scales with similar allowances. To see your monthly figure at any level, use the calculator below.

Government jobs for botany graduates and other pure science graduates include forest service, lab assistant, food safety and teaching posts. A BSc with botany, zoology or agriculture helps for posts like forest guard and state forest services.

Government jobs for law graduates

Law graduate jobs in government are steady and respected. These are the main options for LLB holders:

  • Civil Judge (judicial services): conducted by the state Public Service Commission or the High Court. Rules on practice at the bar before applying have changed recently, so read your state's latest notice carefully.
  • Law officer in banks: through IBPS SO and individual bank notices.
  • Assistant Public Prosecutor and legal assistant posts: through state commissions and central ministries.
  • Judge Advocate General entry: a commissioned officer route in the Army for law graduates. See Indian Army jobs.
  • Any-graduate exams: UPSC, SSC and bank exams are also open to you, and law helps in interviews.

Govt jobs for LLB graduates freshers are fewer than the any-graduate exams, but competition is also smaller. To practise as an advocate, you must enrol with your State Bar Council and clear the bar exam. If you want to teach law or join research, an LLM through CLAT PG needs 50% in LLB (45% for SC and ST). See lawyer career.

Railway jobs and bank jobs after graduation

Railway jobs for graduates come mainly through the RRB NTPC graduate level exam. Posts like Station Master and Goods Train Manager involve shift duty and field work, while Junior Account Assistant and Senior Clerk are office posts that need a typing test. Read railway jobs and station master.

Government bank jobs after graduation are the most popular choice for commerce and maths graduates. The PO post is an officer post with transfers and quick promotion. The clerk post usually stays within your state. RBI posts are fewer but pay very well. See all bank jobs.

Private jobs for fresh graduates

If you need income now, there are fresh graduate jobs in every city. Any graduate jobs like sales, customer support and operations hire freshers year round. These are broad yearly ranges; city, company size and your skills decide where you land.

To compare an offer letter with take-home pay, use our CTC to in-hand salary calculator. Many graduates take a private job and prepare for government exams in the evenings. That works if you protect three hours of study every day.

Best job for girls after graduation

Every job on this page is open to women. Girls often do very well in bank, SSC and teaching exams. Popular choices I see are bank PO and clerk, SSC CGL office posts, government teacher after BEd and TET, LIC AAO, nursing officer and state PCS. Several exams waive the application fee for women. See government jobs for women for details.

State jobs and how to plan your preparation

Every state hires graduates through its own Public Service Commission and staff selection board. For example, Karnataka government jobs for degree holders come through the Karnataka Public Service Commission and state recruitment bodies, with Kannada language rules for many posts. State exams often have higher age limits than central ones, so they are a good backup.

A simple plan that has worked for many of my students:

  1. Pick one main exam and one backup with a similar syllabus, for example SSC CGL with bank PO, or UPSC with state PCS.
  2. Study the official syllabus and previous papers from the commission's website first.
  3. Give 6 months to basics, then take regular mock tests.
  4. Track notifications only on official websites. Dates, vacancies and cut-offs change every cycle.
