NCHM JEE is the main national hotel management entrance exam after class 12. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts it once a year for the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT), and its score is the only way into the 3 year B.Sc Hospitality and Hotel Administration at the Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs). In this guide I cover who can apply, the paper, how ranks turn into seats, other hotel management exams, and a simple study plan.
What is NCHM JEE and who conducts it
NCHMCT is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. It sets the course, syllabus and standards for a network of hotel management institutes across the country. NTA runs the entrance test on its behalf and hands the scores to NCHMCT, which then runs counselling and seat allotment.
The exam leads to the B.Sc Hospitality and Hotel Administration (B.Sc HHA), a 3 year, 6 semester degree. The institutes that take admission through it fall into four groups:
- Central Government IHMs, run under the Ministry of Tourism.
- State Government IHMs.
- A PSU run institute.
- Private institutes affiliated to NCHMCT.
All affiliated institutes accept the NCHM JEE score, and admission to this B.Sc HHA is through this exam only. The list of institutes and seats for the current cycle is in the information bulletin.
Eligibility for the hotel management entrance exam
| Condition | What the bulletin asks for |
|---|---|
| Class 12 | Pass in 10+2 or equivalent from a recognised board |
| Subjects | English must be one of your subjects (core, elective or functional). Any stream is fine: science, commerce or arts |
| Class 12 students | Can apply while appearing, but must show the pass certificate by the date set in the bulletin |
| Medical | A physical fitness certificate from a registered doctor at the time of admission |
| Age | The age rule has changed over the years; read the latest bulletin for any upper limit and relaxation |
There is no minimum percentage in class 12 to sit the test, but reserved seats follow central reservation rules. Check the bulletin for category, PwD and other details before you fill the form.
NCHM JEE exam pattern
The hotel management exam is a computer based test of 3 hours with multiple choice questions. Each correct answer gets 4 marks and each wrong answer loses 1 mark. Unanswered questions get zero, so do not guess blindly.
| Section | What it checks |
|---|---|
| English Language | Grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, sentence correction. This section has the most questions |
| Aptitude for Service Sector | How you would handle guests, teams and situations in a service job. The second biggest section |
| Numerical Ability and Analytical Aptitude | Basic maths up to class 10: percentage, ratio, averages, profit and loss, time and work |
| Reasoning and Logical Deduction | Series, coding, analogies, directions, seating, simple puzzles |
| General Knowledge and Current Affairs | Static GK, recent national and world events, tourism and hospitality news |
The total number of questions has changed in recent cycles, so take the exact count from the current bulletin. What has stayed the same is that English and service aptitude carry the most weight. Strong English alone can lift your rank a lot.
Syllabus outline and how to read it
NCHM JEE has no class 12 science or commerce content. It is an aptitude test. That is good news for arts and commerce students, who often do well here.
- English: tenses, articles, prepositions, synonyms and antonyms, idioms, error spotting, passages.
- Service aptitude: situation based questions about guest care, honesty, teamwork, safety and hygiene. Read each option and pick the one that puts the guest first while following rules.
- Numerical ability: school level maths done fast, without a calculator.
- Reasoning: the same topics as in most aptitude tests.
- GK: current affairs of the last 6 to 8 months, plus tourism basics like famous monuments, national parks, cuisines and festivals of India.
How NCHM JEE scores are used for admission
After the result, NTA shares the scores and ranks with NCHMCT. NCHMCT then runs online counselling in rounds.
- Register for counselling on the NCHMCT counselling portal.
- Fill your choices of institutes in order of preference.
- Seats are allotted on your rank, category and choices.
- Pay the fee, report to the institute and get your documents verified.
Higher ranks usually get the older central IHMs in big cities, which have better hotel links. Fill many choices, including state IHMs, so you do not miss a seat. Dates, cut-off ranks and seat matrix change every year: check them on the official sites.
Other hotel management exams after 12th
NCHM JEE is not the only route. Many hotel management courses are outside the NCHMCT network:
- State universities and state technical boards that run their own hotel management entrance tests or admit on class 12 marks.
- Central and state universities that take admission through CUET for hospitality or tourism degrees.
- Private universities that hold their own tests or interviews for BHM, BBA in hospitality and culinary courses.
- Diplomas and craft courses at food craft institutes and polytechnics, with simple merit based entry.
Write NCHM JEE and at least one other test, so you have a backup. See the full list on entrance exams after 12th.
Courses and jobs after NCHM JEE
The B.Sc HHA covers food production, food and beverage service, front office, housekeeping, accounts, nutrition and hygiene, with industrial training in a working hotel. After the degree, students work in hotels, resorts, restaurants, cruise ships, airline catering, hospitals and institutional catering, or move into sales and events.
| Stage | Typical role | Rough monthly pay |
|---|---|---|
| Fresher | Trainee or associate in a hotel department | About ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 |
| Fresher in a large hotel group | Management trainee | About ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 |
| After 5 to 8 years | Department head | About ₹50,000 to ₹1.2 lakh |
Pay depends on the city, the size of the hotel, your department and how fast you take on responsibility. For the full course, fees and salary picture, read our hotel management career guide. You can also compare it with cabin crew jobs and other career options after 12th.
Preparation plan for NCHM JEE
Three to four months of steady work is enough for most students. Start right after your class 12 board exams, or earlier if you can.
- Daily English: read one newspaper editorial, note 10 new words, and do one grammar exercise and one passage.
- Maths and reasoning: 30 to 40 questions a day, timed. Focus on speed, since the topics are easy.
- Service aptitude: solve past style questions and talk through your answers with someone. Think like a guest.
- GK: 20 minutes daily on current affairs, plus tourism and food facts about Indian states.
- Mocks: in the last month, take a full 3 hour mock twice a week and study every mistake. Learn when to skip a question to avoid negative marks.
Also prepare for the work itself: hotel jobs mean shifts, festivals and weekends. If you like people and can stay calm under pressure, this field will suit you. Not sure yet? Try our career counselling test.
