Highest Paying Jobs in India: Salary, Route and Study Time

Quick answerThe highest paying jobs in India include specialist doctors, data scientists and AI engineers, software engineers, chartered accountants, pilots and investment bankers. In government, UPSC Group A posts start at Level 10 with basic pay of ₹56,100.

Every year parents ask me one question more than any other: what are the highest paying jobs in India, and can my child get there? The short answer is that the top earners are specialist doctors, skilled tech professionals such as data scientists and software engineers, chartered accountants, pilots, finance and management professionals, and senior government officers. The longer answer, which matters more, is how long each path takes, what it costs and who it suits. That is what this page covers.

Please read the salary figures here as broad ranges, not promises. Private pay depends on your city, your employer, your skill and your luck in the job market. Government pay is fixed by the pay matrix and is the same for everyone at the same level.

Highest paying jobs in India: the top list

This table compares the best high paying jobs by route, study time and pay. Private figures are rough yearly ranges for a fresher and after 5 to 8 years.

Highest salary jobs in India per month: government side

Government jobs do not match the very top private salaries, but they come with job security, pension benefits, housing and allowances. Here are the best paid entry points, with basic pay from the 7th CPC pay matrix.

PostHow you get inPay level at entryStarting basic per month
IAS, IPS, IFSUPSC Civil Services: prelims, mains, interviewLevel 10₹56,100
Engineering ServicesUPSC ESE, engineering degreeLevel 10₹56,100
ISRO or DRDO scientistEngineering or science degree, written test and interviewLevel 10₹56,100
SBI POPrelims, mains, group exercise and interviewBank scale₹48,480 basic plus 4 advance increments

At the very top of the pay matrix, Level 18 has a fixed basic of ₹2,50,000 a month. That is the pay of the most senior officers such as the Cabinet Secretary, reached only after a full career. On top of basic you get DA, HRA based on city class and transport allowance. Use the salary calculator to see in-hand pay at any level, and read highest paying govt jobs for the full government list.

For UPSC Civil Services, you need a graduate degree, and the age limit is 21 to 32 years for general candidates, with six attempts. It is one of the toughest exams in India, so plan at least one to two years of serious preparation.

High salary jobs in science stream

Science students have the widest choice of high salary jobs.

  • PCM: software and data roles, core engineering through UPSC ESE or PSUs, commercial pilot, merchant navy, architecture, and defence officer entries through NDA. Read courses after 12th science.
  • PCB: MBBS and specialist medicine through NEET UG. NEET is also the entrance for AYUSH degrees like BAMS and BHMS.

High salary jobs for PCB students other than MBBS: dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy with a move into regulatory or research roles, physiotherapy with a private practice, and biotechnology with a master's degree and research. These start lower than MBBS in most cases, but good professionals grow steadily. See medical courses after 12th and biotechnology careers.

Best jobs in India for commerce and arts students

Commerce students can reach the top pay band through CA, company secretary, cost accountant and finance roles. The CA route under ICAI starts with Foundation after class 12, then Intermediate, then two years of practical training, then Final. Graduates who meet the marks rule can skip Foundation through direct entry. See courses after 12th commerce.

Arts students do very well in law, civil services, design, psychology and journalism. Law through a five year integrated course can lead to corporate practice. UPSC Civil Services is open to graduates from any stream, and many toppers come from arts. Read courses after 12th arts.

Which job has the highest salary after 12th

If you want to start earning well soon after 12th, a few routes stand out:

  • Defence officer through NDA: after training, you are commissioned as an officer at Level 10. See NDA.
  • Commercial pilot: high pay, but the training cost is very high, and jobs depend on airline hiring cycles.
  • Merchant navy: good pay at sea, with long months away from home.

Most other top jobs need a degree first. That is fine. A good degree from a government college costs much less and still opens these doors.

What decides how much you actually earn

  • Skill level: two software engineers with the same degree can earn very different pay. The one who keeps learning moves up.
  • City: metro cities pay more but cost more to live in.
  • Employer size: large firms and multinational employers usually pay more than small firms.
  • Specialisation: a specialist doctor or a CA with a niche like tax or audit earns more than a generalist.
  • CTC vs in-hand: private offers quote CTC, which includes PF, bonus and insurance. Your monthly in-hand is lower. Use the CTC to in-hand calculator before you compare offers.

Highest paying jobs in the future

Looking ahead, demand is growing for data science, AI and machine learning, cyber security, cloud and chip design, renewable energy engineering, and healthcare specialists. The common thread is deep skill. A degree gets you the interview; a skill you can prove gets you the high salary. See cyber security and career options after 12th.

How to choose the right high paying job for you

High salary should not be the only reason. Five years of medicine or three attempts at CA Final are hard if you do not enjoy the subject. Ask yourself three questions: do I like this work, can my family support the study time and fees, and am I ready for the competition? If you are unsure about your stream or interests, take the short quiz below.
