What ISRO, DRDO and BARC scientists do

These three are the main science employers of the Government of India.

  • ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation, under the Department of Space) builds satellites, launch vehicles and ground systems. Engineers design circuits, write flight software, test engines, assemble satellites and track missions.
  • DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation, under the Ministry of Defence) develops missiles, radars, electronic warfare systems, armoured vehicles and other defence equipment in labs across the country.
  • BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, under the Department of Atomic Energy) works on nuclear reactors, fuel, radiation safety, medicine and research.

A typical day mixes design work, testing in labs, writing reports and reviews with senior scientists. Before a launch or trial, hours get long and you may travel to test ranges. The work is stable, highly respected and gives you a chance to build things the country uses.

ISRO scientist salary, DRDO scientist salary and BARC salary by post

All three organisations follow the central government pay matrix. Here are the common entry posts in ISRO jobs, DRDO jobs and BARC.

PostOrganisationMinimum qualificationPay levelStarting basic
Scientist/Engineer 'SC'ISROBE/BTech with 65% or CGPA 6.84Level 10₹56,100
Scientist 'B'DRDOFirst class BE/BTech or MSc, with GATELevel 10₹56,100

Technician 'A'DRDO (CEPTAM)10th plus ITILevel 2₹19,900

So the ISRO salary for an engineer and the DRDO scientist B salary are the same at entry. The salary box at the top of this page shows the current gross and in-hand estimate for each level. Your actual ISRO or DRDO salary depends on the city: HRA is highest in X class cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai, and lower in smaller towns. Some centres offer staff quarters instead of HRA. NPS contribution is deducted every month.

The official ISRO notices also list medical facilities for you and dependents, a subsidised canteen, leave travel concession, group insurance and house building advance. To understand each part of pay, see salary allowances explained.

Why some IITians do not join ISRO

Many people search for "IITians not joining ISRO salary" and ask if pay is the reason. It is true that top private offers to fresh engineers can pay more in the first few years. ISRO and DRDO give job security, pension benefits under NPS, housing and the chance to work on national missions. Pick based on what kind of work you want for the next 30 years, not only the first year's package. Our page on engineer salary compares both sides.

ISRO exam: how ICRB recruits scientists

The ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB) recruits Scientist/Engineer 'SC' for ISRO centres. It is not a fixed yearly exam; ICRB issues an advertisement when posts are open, usually in Electronics, Mechanical and Computer Science, and sometimes other branches.

  • Eligibility: BE/BTech or equivalent in the relevant branch, first class with at least 65% aggregate or CGPA 6.84 on 10. Final year students can apply if they will get the degree by the date in the notice.
  • ISRO exam age limit: 28 years on the closing date in recent ICRB adverts, with relaxation for SC, ST, OBC, PwBD, ex-servicemen and serving central government staff as per rules.
  • Written test: one objective paper of 120 minutes. In the latest advert, Part A had 80 MCQs with one third negative marking and Part B had up to 15 questions for 20 marks with no negative marking.
  • Interview: 100 marks, covering technical knowledge, awareness in your field, communication, comprehension and academic record. About five candidates per post are called.
  • Final merit: 50% weightage to the written test and 50% to the interview.

In some past cycles ICRB shortlisted candidates using the GATE score instead of its own written test, so read the selection section of each advert. The ISRO exam syllabus is your core engineering subjects at the BTech level. Diploma and ITI posts (Technical Assistant, Technician 'B') are advertised by individual ISRO centres, with a written test of 80 MCQs and a qualifying skill test.

DRDO exam: Scientist B through RAC and CEPTAM

DRDO hires in two main ways. If you are wondering how to get a job in DRDO, start with the route that matches your qualification.

DRDO Scientist 'B' (RAC)

The Recruitment and Assessment Centre (RAC) of DRDO advertises Scientist 'B' posts for DRDO, ADA and some other defence and science departments.

  • DRDO exam eligibility: first class BE/BTech in the listed branch, or first class MSc for science posts, plus a valid GATE score in the matching paper.
  • Selection: in most branches, candidates are shortlisted by GATE score and called for interview, with 80% weightage to GATE and 20% to the interview. In some branches RAC holds its own written exam after GATE shortlisting.
  • Age limit: in recent adverts, 28 years for DRDO posts (31 for OBC and 33 for SC and ST), with higher limits for some other departments. Check the current advert.

Since GATE is the gate to this job, prepare for the GATE exam seriously during your final year.

DRDO CEPTAM for technical staff

The Centre for Personnel Talent Management (CEPTAM) runs the DRDO entry test for Senior Technical Assistant 'B' (Level 6) and Technician 'A' (Level 2). The age limit in the latest notice was 18 to 28 years, with the usual relaxations.

StageSTA 'B'Technician 'A'
Tier I (screening)150 MCQs in 120 minutes: general science, English, quantitative aptitude, reasoningSame as STA 'B'
Tier II120 subject MCQs in 120 minutes, plus a personality test that is not counted120 trade MCQs in 90 minutes, plus a personality test that is not counted
Trade testNot applicablePractical, qualifying only

Both tiers in the DRDO CEPTAM exam pattern have a negative marking of 0.25 for each wrong answer.

BARC exam: OCES and DGFS

BARC recruits Scientific Officers through the Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates (OCES) and the DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS). Here is what is BARC exam in short:

  • BARC exam eligibility: BE/BTech in an eligible branch, or MSc in physics, chemistry, biosciences, geology or geophysics, generally with at least 60% marks from a regular full time course.
  • Age limit: 26 years for general, 29 for OBC and 31 for SC and ST, as per the latest brochure.
  • Screening: either the BARC online exam or a valid GATE score.
  • Selection: final selection is only on the interview, subject to medical fitness.
  • Training and pay: one year of training at a BARC training school with a monthly stipend, then appointment as Scientific Officer at Level 10, ₹56,100 basic. You sign a bond to serve the Department of Atomic Energy for at least three years.

So the BARC scientific officer salary matches the ISRO and DRDO entry pay. The BARC exam syllabus follows your degree subjects.

Training and promotions

New ISRO engineers learn on the job inside project teams. DRDO scientists go through induction training, and BARC officers finish their year at the training school before joining a division.

Promotion in these organisations is merit based. Your work is reviewed by a committee at set intervals, and good performers move up without waiting for a vacancy. The usual grades are:

  • ISRO: Scientist/Engineer SC, SD, SE, SF, SG, then H, Outstanding Scientist and Distinguished Scientist.
  • DRDO: Scientist B, C, D, E, F, G, then H (Outstanding Scientist) and Distinguished Scientist.

Each grade has a higher pay level. The ISRO director salary and ISRO chairman salary sit at the top levels of the pay matrix, which is far above the entry pay. A higher degree such as an MTech or PhD, often sponsored during service, helps your growth.

How to prepare and the official websites

  • Keep your marks high: 65% (ISRO) and first class (DRDO) are hard cut-offs. Plan from the first year of BTech.
  • Take GATE every year in your final year and after: it opens DRDO, BARC and many PSU jobs at once.
  • Practise ISRO past papers: the written test is fast and has negative marking.
  • Prepare for interviews: revise your final year project and two or three favourite subjects in depth. Interview boards ask why, not just what.
  • Diploma and ITI students: watch ISRO centre adverts and CEPTAM notices; see diploma jobs and ITI jobs for more options.

Most students need 6 to 12 months of steady GATE level preparation. For a related central engineering route, see Indian Engineering Services.
