The forest guard salary is set by each state, because forest guard (van rakshak) is a state forest department post. To give you a real example, Goa's latest notice places Forest Guard at Level 2 of the pay matrix, where basic pay starts at ₹19,900, and Round Forester at Level 3, starting at ₹21,700, with DA and allowances on top. Other states use their own pay levels. This page explains the job, the physical tests, the exam pattern and how to find the exact pay in your state.

I have seen many rural students do very well in this job, because they are used to walking long distances and know the local area. If you love the outdoors and are physically fit, forest guard is worth a serious look after class 10 or 12.

What a forest guard does

The forest guard is the frontline staff of the forest department. Each guard looks after a beat, which is a fixed area of forest. Daily work includes:

  • Patrolling the beat on foot to stop illegal tree cutting, mining, encroachment and poaching.
  • Protecting wildlife, recording animal sightings and helping in wildlife census.
  • Fire watch in the dry season and helping to put out forest fires.
  • Planting work in nurseries and plantations.
  • Handling human and animal conflict with villagers living near the forest.
  • Seizing illegal timber or produce and helping in forest offence cases.

Above the forest guard is the Forester (called Round Forester or Vanpal in some states), and above that the Deputy Ranger and Range Forest Officer. Many states call the forest guard post Van Rakshak or Beat Guard.

Examples are the Odisha Sub-Ordinate Staff Selection Commission (OSSSC) for the Odisha forest guard salary and forester salary in Odisha, the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board for the RSSB forester salary, the Uttarakhand Subordinate Service Selection Commission for the UKSSSC forest guard salary, and the MP Employees Selection Board for the MP forest guard salary. Physical standards and walking test

This is the part where many candidates fail, so take it seriously. Most states have a minimum height and chest for men, a minimum height for women, and a walking test where you must cover a set distance within four hours.

TestGoa (Forest Guard)Odisha (Forest Guard)
Height, men163 cm168 cm (ST 158 cm)
Chest, men79 cm, 84 cm expanded81 cm, with up to 5 cm expansion
Height, women150 cm153 cm
Walking test, men25 km in 4 hours25 km in 4 hours
Walking test, women16 km in 4 hours16 km in 4 hours

The walking test is qualifying only in both states, which means it gives no marks but you must pass it. Odisha's rules also say colour blindness is a disqualification. The 25 km for men and 16 km for women in four hours pattern is common across states and even for higher forest posts, as seen in a Kerala PSC notice for Range Forest Officer. Start walking practice at least three months before the test. Walk 10 km at a fast pace, then slowly build up to the full distance in good shoes.

Forest guard exam pattern and syllabus

The selection usually has a written exam, the physical tests, document verification and a medical check. Two real examples:

  • Goa: CBT-I screening test of 60 marks in 75 minutes (reasoning 10, numerical ability 10, Konkani 10, English and comprehension 30). Candidates around 20 times the posts in each category are called for the physical endurance test. Then CBT-II of 60 marks in 75 minutes (reasoning 10, numerical ability 10, English and comprehension 20, general geography of Goa 20). No negative marking.
  • Odisha: a written test of 100 marks shortlists candidates in a 1 to 3 ratio for the physical tests. The forest guard post is a division cadre post, so you choose divisions, and select lists are made division-wise on written test marks.

The forest guard exam syllabus in most states covers:

  • General knowledge and current affairs, with focus on the state.
  • Basic maths and reasoning at class 10 level.
  • Language: the state language and often English.
  • Basic science, environment, forests and wildlife.
  • Geography of the state, its rivers, forests and protected areas.

The exact papers, marks and negative marking are in each notification. Download them from the official commission website.

Training

After selection, forest guards go through a training course. Goa's notice says selected candidates must complete a twelve month course at the Forest Training School, Valpoi, or wherever directed, and a candidate who fails is not given annual increment or promotion until the failed subjects are cleared. Training covers forest law, survey, plant and animal identification, fire control, first aid, physical training and handling of forest offence cases. Some states also give arms training.

Promotion and career growth

  • Forest Guard to Forester by promotion as per state rules.
  • Forester to Deputy Ranger or Range Forest Officer in many states, by promotion or a departmental route.
  • Range Forest Officer to Assistant Conservator of Forests through state promotion or the state forest service exam.

Graduates in science or forestry can aim higher directly through the state forest service or the Indian Forest Service. Read about forestry and allied degrees on agriculture courses and BSc courses.

How to prepare for the forest guard exam

  • Read the notice first: qualification, height, chest and age rules are strict.
  • Train your body early: walking test practice, plus basic running and stretching.
  • Study for 4 to 6 months: class 10 maths, reasoning, language and state GK. Add environment and wildlife basics.
  • Solve previous papers from the official commission website.
  • Apply to related posts too: police constable, home guard, lekhpal and patwari and SSC GD Constable use similar preparation.
