These ACCA course details are for commerce students who want a finance qualification that is recognised outside India. I also cover the CFA course, the US CPA course and the FRM course, because students usually compare all four. All of them are run by overseas professional bodies, fees are charged in foreign currency, and none of them replaces CA if you want to sign company audits in India. Each one has a clear use, and the right choice depends on the job you want.
ACCA, CFA, CPA and FRM: which is which
| Course | Run by | Main focus | Usual time |

ACCA course details: levels, eligibility and duration
What is ACCA course structure? It has 13 exams in three levels, plus an ethics module and practical experience.
- Applied Knowledge (3 exams): business and technology, management accounting, financial accounting.
- Applied Skills (6 exams): corporate and business law, performance management, taxation, financial reporting, audit and assurance, financial management.
- Strategic Professional (4 exams): two compulsory papers on strategic business leadership and strategic business reporting, plus two options from advanced audit, advanced tax, advanced financial management and advanced performance management.
- Ethics and Professional Skills module done online.
- Practical experience: 36 months in a relevant role, which can be done before, during or after the exams.
ACCA course eligibility in India: students who have passed class 12 can register if they meet ACCA's marks requirement in English and in Maths or Accounts; students who fall short can begin with ACCA's foundation-level route. BCom graduates get exemptions from some early papers, and qualified CAs get exemptions from many more. Check accaglobal.com for the exact rules and exemption list for your degree.
The ACCA course duration is about two and a half to four years from scratch, and less with exemptions. Exams are held four times a year for most papers, so you can move at your own speed.
ACCA course fees in India
ACCA charges a one-time registration fee, a yearly subscription and a fee for each exam, all in British pounds. Later papers cost more than early ones, and early booking is cheaper. Across all papers, ACCA's own fees usually add up to roughly ₹2.5 to 4 lakh, depending on exemptions, the exchange rate and booking dates. Exemptions also carry a fee. Coaching is extra. For the current ACCA exam fees in Indian rupees, convert the pound amounts on accaglobal.com at the day's rate.
CFA course details: levels, syllabus, duration and fees
The CFA course syllabus is split across three levels. Each CFA exam is computer based and taken at test centres, including centres in India.
- Level I: tools and concepts. Ethics, quantitative methods, economics, financial statement analysis, corporate issuers, equity, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments and portfolio management.
- Level II: applying the tools, mostly through case-based question sets on valuation.
- Level III: portfolio management and wealth planning, with a choice of specialised pathways.
CFA course eligibility: you need to be close to finishing a bachelor's degree, have a degree, or have qualifying work experience (CFA Institute sets the exact rule). To use the charter after passing, you also need relevant work experience. The CFA course duration is usually two and a half to four years, because each level needs several months of study and pass rates are low. CFA full form is Chartered Financial Analyst.
CFA course fees in India include a one-time enrolment fee and an exam fee for each level, in US dollars. All three levels together usually cost roughly ₹2.5 to 4 lakh at current exchange rates, more if you need repeat attempts. Check cfainstitute.org for current CFA exam fees.
CPA course and FRM course in brief
US CPA course details: the exam has core sections on auditing, financial accounting and regulation (tax and business law), plus one discipline section you choose. To sit the exam and get a licence, a US state board must accept your education. Many boards expect more credit than a three-year Indian BCom gives, so Indian students often add an MCom, an MBA or CA. Check rules through nasba.org. CPA exam cost, education evaluation and licensing fees together usually come to roughly ₹3 to 4 lakh or more. CPA course duration is about one to two years for the exam itself.
FRM course details: FRM has Part I (foundations of risk, quantitative analysis, markets and valuation) and Part II (market, credit, operational and liquidity risk, and current issues). You also need two years of relevant work experience to be certified. FRM course fees are charged in US dollars, usually roughly ₹1.5 to 2.5 lakh in all. See garp.org.
ACCA salary in India, CFA salary and CPA salary
These are broad yearly ranges for India. City, employer type, your degree and actual experience matter more than the title alone.
| Qualification | Fresher or early career | After 5 to 8 years |
|---|---|---|
| ACCA (qualified or affiliate) | ₹4 to 8 lakh | ₹12 to 25 lakh |
| CFA (all levels cleared) | ₹6 to 12 lakh, often already in a finance job | ₹15 to 35 lakh or more |
| US CPA | ₹6 to 10 lakh | ₹15 to 25 lakh |
| FRM | ₹6 to 10 lakh | ₹15 to 30 lakh |
ACCA salary per month for a fresher is roughly ₹35,000 to ₹65,000 gross. The CFA salary in India jumps most for people working in fund management and research, often after an MBA. Use the calculator below on any offer.
ACCA careers, CFA jobs and where people work
- ACCA jobs in India: shared service and global capability centres of multinational groups, audit firms working on international clients, accounts and reporting teams, and roles abroad, especially in the UK, the Gulf and Southeast Asia.
- CFA jobs: equity research, portfolio management, wealth management, credit analysis and investment banking.
- CPA jobs: US accounting, audit and tax work handled from India, and roles in the USA if you meet licence and visa rules.
- FRM jobs: risk teams in banks, insurers and finance companies.
One honest warning. In India, only an ICAI member can sign a statutory audit report, and only an ICSI member can act as company secretary. ACCA and CPA are valued by employers, but they do not give these legal rights. If an Indian practice is your goal, choose CA, CS or CMA.
Which one should you choose: pros and cons
| Course | Best point | Weak point |
|---|---|---|
| ACCA | Global recognition, flexible exam timing | Costly in rupees; no audit signing rights in India |
| CFA | Top name in investment jobs | Very low pass rates; charter needs work experience |
| CPA | Strong demand for US accounting work | Education rules are tricky for three-year degrees |
| FRM | Short, focused on banking risk | Narrow field; needs experience to use well |

Questions students ask
What is ACCA course full form and is it valid in India?
ACCA stands for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, a UK professional body. Employers in India, especially multinational finance centres, value it. It does not give the right to sign statutory audits in India, which only ICAI members have.
What is the ACCA course duration?
About two and a half to four years for all 13 exams if you start after class 12. Graduates and CAs with exemptions finish faster. You also need 36 months of relevant work experience for membership.
What are ACCA course fees in India?
ACCA's registration, yearly subscription and exam fees together usually come to roughly ₹2.5 to 4 lakh, charged in pounds. Exemptions, exchange rates and early booking change the total. Coaching is extra.
What are the CFA course fees in India?
CFA has a one-time enrolment fee and an exam fee for each of the three levels, in US dollars. In total this is usually roughly ₹2.5 to 4 lakh if you pass each level on the first attempt.
Which is better, CA or ACCA?
For a career in Indian audit or your own practice, CA is better because only ICAI members can sign audit reports. For jobs with multinational groups or abroad, ACCA is useful and more flexible. Many students do CA and then take ACCA exemptions.
What is the CPA course and who can take it?
The US CPA is a licence for accountants in the USA, run through state boards. Indian students need their education evaluated, and many need an MCom, MBA or CA to meet credit rules. Check nasba.org for state rules.
