Salary Calculator: 7th Pay Commission In-Hand Salary

Quick answerChoose your pay level, years of service and city class. The calculator adds basic, DA at the current rate, HRA and transport allowance, then cuts 10% NPS to show your estimated in-hand salary before income tax.

This salary calculator works out the monthly pay of a central government employee on the 7th CPC pay matrix. Pick your pay level, years of service and city class, and it shows basic pay, DA, HRA, transport allowance, gross pay, the NPS cut and your estimated in-hand salary before income tax.

The DA box is filled in with the current DA rate, prefilled in the calculator. Change it to test a future DA hike. Every figure is an estimate.

How to use this 7th pay commission salary calculator

  1. Pay level: find it in your notification or appointment letter. For example, SSC CGL posts run from Level 4 to Level 8.
  2. Years of service: enter 0 for a new joiner. Each year adds one annual increment of about 3%, so basic moves one step down the pay matrix column.
  3. City class: X for the biggest cities, Y for mid size cities, Z for everywhere else. This sets your HRA.
  4. Higher transport allowance city: tick it if you are posted in one of the 19 big urban areas listed further down.
  5. DA rate: leave the prefilled value unless you want to test a future rate.

The tool then adds everything up and shows your take home salary before income tax. This take home salary calculator is free, so try as many levels as you like before you fill a form.

How the in hand salary calculator works it out

Like any 7th pay salary calculator, the tool follows this method.

PartHow it is calculated
Basic payStarting basic of your level, plus one 3% increment for each completed year (rounded as in the pay matrix)
DA (Dearness Allowance)Basic pay × the current DA rate
HRA (House Rent Allowance)30% of basic in X cities, 20% in Y cities, 10% in Z cities
Transport allowanceFixed amount by level and city, plus DA on that amount
Gross payBasic + DA + HRA + transport allowance with DA
NPS deduction10% of (basic + DA)
Estimated in-handGross pay minus NPS, before income tax and small cuts

HRA is 30%, 20% and 10% now because DA has crossed 50%. The Finance Ministry order on HRA says the rates move from 24%, 16% and 8% to 27%, 18% and 9% when DA crosses 25%, and to 30%, 20% and 10% when DA crosses 50%. There is also a minimum HRA of ₹5,400, ₹3,600 and ₹1,800 for X, Y and Z cities.

Central government salary calculator: level wise table

This table shows the parts that do not depend on DA. Use the tool at the top for DA, gross and in-hand. The old grade pay is given so that people who still talk in grade pay can match it to a level.

Pay levelOld grade payStarting basicHRA X cityHRA Y cityHRA Z cityTransport allowance (big city / other)
Level 1₹1,800₹18,000₹5,400₹3,600₹1,800₹1,350 / ₹900
Level 2₹1,900₹19,900₹5,970₹3,980₹1,990₹1,350 / ₹900
Level 3₹2,000₹21,700₹6,510₹4,340₹2,170₹3,600 / ₹1,800
Level 4₹2,400₹25,500₹7,650₹5,100₹2,550₹3,600 / ₹1,800
Level 5₹2,800₹29,200₹8,760₹5,840₹2,920₹3,600 / ₹1,800
Level 6₹4,200₹35,400₹10,620₹7,080₹3,540₹3,600 / ₹1,800
Level 7₹4,600₹44,900₹13,470₹8,980₹4,490₹3,600 / ₹1,800
Level 8₹4,800₹47,600₹14,280₹9,520₹4,760₹3,600 / ₹1,800
Level 9₹5,400 (PB 2)₹53,100₹15,930₹10,620₹5,310₹7,200 / ₹3,600
Level 10₹5,400 (PB 3)₹56,100₹16,830₹11,220₹5,610₹7,200 / ₹3,600

Transport allowance amounts above are before DA. DA is paid on top of them at the same rate as on basic pay.

Worked examples: level 6, level 4 and level 10 salary

DA is shown as a formula because the rate changes twice a year. Put the same inputs in the tool to see full rupee figures.

ItemLevel 4, new joiner, Z cityLevel 6, new joiner, X city (big city)Level 10, new joiner, Y city
Basic pay₹25,500₹35,400₹56,100
DA₹25,500 × DA rate₹35,400 × DA rate₹56,100 × DA rate
HRA₹2,550 (10%)₹10,620 (30%)₹11,220 (20%)
Transport allowance₹1,800 + DA on it₹3,600 + DA on it₹3,600 + DA on it
NPS (10%)10% of basic + DA10% of basic + DA10% of basic + DA

See how the city changes the result. The same Level 6 employee gets ₹10,620 as HRA in an X city but only ₹3,540 in a Z city. So pay level 6 in hand salary can differ by more than ₹7,000 a month only because of the posting. The same is true for pay level 7 in hand salary and pay level 4 in hand salary.

Which cities are X, Y and Z, and which get higher transport allowance

X class: the largest urban areas, such as Delhi, Greater Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune. Y class: mid size cities, mostly state capitals and large district towns. Z class: all other places, including villages and small towns.

The higher transport allowance is paid in 19 urban areas named in the Finance Ministry order: Hyderabad, Patna, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bengaluru, Kochi, Kozhikode, Indore, Greater Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Jaipur, Chennai, Coimbatore, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Lucknow and Kolkata. This list is not the same as the X city list, which is why the tool asks about it separately.

What this govt salary calculator does not cover

  • Income tax: your in-hand figure is before tax. Many lower level employees pay little or no tax in the new regime, but check your own case.
  • Small cuts: CGHS contribution, group insurance (CGEGIS), and in some states professional tax. These are usually small amounts.
  • Special allowances: risk allowance, uniform allowance, overtime, hard area allowance and others depend on the post.
  • Bank salaries: bank staff are not on the 7th CPC matrix. Their pay follows the bipartite settlement between banks and unions, so a 12th bipartite settlement expected salary calculator or bankers salary calculator works differently. See bank jobs, IBPS PO and SBI clerk for bank pay.
  • State government pay: states have their own matrix and DA. A Bihar teacher salary calculator or Rajasthan salary calculator needs the state rates.

Most salary calculator India searches are about private jobs. There pay is quoted as CTC, so use our CTC to in-hand salary calculator instead.

8th Pay Commission and this salary calculator

An 8 pay commission salary calculator can only give guesses until the government notifies a new pay matrix and new fitment factor. Till that happens, central salaries are paid on the 7th CPC matrix used here. When the new matrix is notified, the levels and starting basic pay in this tool will be updated.

Questions students ask

How do I calculate in hand salary for a central govt job?

Add basic pay, DA (basic × current DA rate), HRA by city class and transport allowance with DA on it. Then subtract 10% of basic plus DA for NPS. The result is your take home salary before income tax and small cuts like CGHS.

What is the level 6 salary in the 7th pay commission?

Level 6 starts at a basic pay of ₹35,400 (old grade pay ₹4,200). HRA is ₹10,620 in an X city, ₹7,080 in a Y city and ₹3,540 in a Z city. Choose Level 6 in the calculator to see DA, gross and in-hand at the current DA rate.

What is the level 10 salary for a new officer?

Level 10 starts at a basic pay of ₹56,100. Transport allowance is ₹7,200 plus DA in the 19 big urban areas and ₹3,600 plus DA elsewhere. HRA adds 10% to 30% of basic depending on the city.

Why is my actual salary less than the 7th CPC salary calculator shows?

The calculator does not cut income tax, CGHS contribution, group insurance or professional tax. Also, if you live in a government quarter, you do not get HRA. Check your payslip for these lines.

Is DA the same for all pay levels?

Yes. DA is the same percentage of basic pay for every level, so a higher basic gives a higher DA amount. The rate is revised twice a year by the central government, which is why the calculator keeps the current DA rate prefilled.

Can I use this calculator for bank or state government jobs?

Not directly. Bank pay follows the bipartite settlement, and states set their own pay matrix and DA. Use the tool only for central pay matrix jobs, or for state jobs that copy the central matrix and DA.
