Air hostess salary, the training needed and the selection rules are the three things girls and boys ask me about most when they want to fly as cabin crew. This page gives honest answers: the air hostess salary in India for freshers and seniors, who can apply, which air hostess course is worth it, and what airport ground staff jobs pay if cabin crew does not work out.
Figures here are broad ranges. Pay depends on the airline type, domestic or international flying, monthly flying hours and the city you are based in.
What cabin crew really do
Air hostess, flight attendant and cabin crew are the same job. Men are called flight stewards or simply cabin crew. The first duty is safety, not serving food. Crew check emergency equipment before each flight, give the safety demo, manage boarding, handle medical emergencies, calm upset passengers and lead evacuation if needed. Service of meals and sales comes after that.
The day starts with a briefing before the flight. A crew member may do two to four short domestic sectors in one duty, or one long international flight with a rest stop abroad. Duty and rest hours follow DGCA rules. Early mornings, night flights, festivals on duty and standing for hours are normal.
Air hostess salary in India
Cabin crew pay has two parts: a fixed monthly amount and a flying allowance paid per hour flown. So the air hostess salary per month goes up in busy months.
| Stage | Rough monthly pay |
|---|---|
| Trainee during airline training | A small stipend, or unpaid at some airlines |
| Fresher on domestic flights | Roughly ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 |
| Fresher with a full-service or international airline | Roughly ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh |
| Senior crew or cabin supervisor (5 to 8 years) | Roughly ₹70,000 to ₹1.5 lakh |
| Crew with foreign carriers in the Gulf and Asia | Often higher, with stay and transport provided |
So what is the salary of air hostess in India at the start? For most new domestic crew, roughly ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 a month. The cabin crew salary in India rises with promotion to senior crew, purser or in-flight manager. Many airlines also give free or cheap travel for family, which is a real benefit. Air hostess salary in Delhi or Mumbai bases may be a bit higher because of city allowances, but living costs are higher too.
Who can apply: eligibility for cabin crew jobs
- Education: 12th pass in any stream. Graduates and those with a hospitality background get some preference.
- Age: freshers are usually taken between about 18 and 27 years. Each airline sets its own limit.
- Height and fitness: airlines set a minimum height and a healthy weight for height. Exact numbers differ by airline, so read each advertisement.
- Looks and grooming: clear skin, no visible tattoos on the uniform areas at many airlines, neat appearance.
- Language: fluent English and Hindi. A foreign language helps for international routes.
- Medical: you must pass the airline medical. Eyesight correctable with lenses is often fine.
- Passport: a valid Indian passport is usually required.
Air hostess course: do you need one
Here is the honest truth: airlines train every selected candidate themselves. The training covers safety and emergency procedures, first aid, aircraft doors and slides, firefighting, ditching and service. It is approved under DGCA rules, and you cannot fly without it. So an outside air hostess course is not compulsory.
A good private cabin crew course still helps with grooming, spoken English, interview practice and confidence. Choose carefully:
| Option | Air hostess course duration | Rough air hostess course fee |
|---|---|---|
| Short certificate in grooming and interview skills | 3 to 6 months | Roughly ₹30,000 to ₹1 lakh |
| Diploma in aviation and hospitality | About 1 year | Roughly ₹1 lakh to ₹3 lakh |
| BBA aviation or B.Sc aviation and hospitality | 3 years | Roughly ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh in total |
| Hotel management degree | 3 to 4 years | Government institutes cost much less than private ones |
A degree gives you a backup if you are not selected or when you leave flying. Our hotel management and BBA course pages explain those routes. Be careful of any institute that promises a job for a fee. Only airlines decide selection.
How airlines select cabin crew
- Online application on the airline careers page or a walk-in drive.
- Grooming check and height measurement.
- Group discussion or group activity.
- Personal interview on why you want the job, handling difficult passengers and teamwork.
- Some airlines also hold a short written test on English and general awareness. Air hostess exam questions are usually simple, but your spoken English must be strong.
- Medical test and background check, then joining the training batch.
Practise mock interviews in front of family. Many good candidates clear on their second or third try.
Airport jobs: ground staff salary and roles
If flying does not suit you, airport jobs are a large field. Airport ground staff jobs include check-in and boarding agents, customer service, baggage handling supervisors, ramp staff, ticketing, lounge staff and cargo handling. Most are with airlines, ground handling companies and airport operators.
The airport ground staff salary for freshers is roughly ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 a month, and ground staff in airport salary rises to roughly ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 with experience and a supervisor post. Ground staff jobs for freshers usually need 12th pass with good spoken English. New airports keep opening across India, so watch for airport jobs in your own state.
For government airport jobs, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) recruits junior assistants, junior executives and air traffic controllers through its own notifications on its official website. For IGI airport jobs in Delhi or any other big airport, remember that many different employers work on the same campus, so read every notice carefully and never pay a fee to an agent.
